Jaisalmer

The medieval Kingdom of Jaisalmer was founded by Rawal Jaisal in 1156 A.D. He moved the capital of his ancestors from Ludhurva, some twenty kilometers away, and built one of the most stunning citadels, in the heart of The Great Thar Desert. Jaisalmer, meaning ‘The hill fort of Jaisal’ became the seat of the Rawals of Jaisalmer, the head of the Bhatti Clan of Rajputs. A 'living' fort, it has within its walls beautiful palaces and havelis. It is also known for its vibrant culture and unique and utterly hospitable desert people.

It is surrounded by a beautiful wilderness in the form of the Desert National Park which is home to many desert species including the rare Great Indian Bustard, and the shy Indian Gazelle. There are also some impressive sand dunes and a fossil park around the area.
